Yorkshire Bank Fc
Vs Fc St Nicholas
The
Yorkshire Bank and Fc St Nicholas have had many close games with one
another over the past three or four seasons. This weekend was going
to be no exception. The St Nicholas camp believing they could
produce a late title charge with the full 3 points, the Bank wanting
to secure their place at the top of Senior A with Heckmondwike again
not playing a Senior A fixture.
The
game was played at Wortley Wreck for the second time this season,
the pitch was not the best, and the strong winds topped off awful
conditions that make things difficult for both sides. The Bank lined
up with a 3-5-2 formation (Downhill) with Earnshaw between the
sticks, Paul Stevens, Simon Midwood and Rich Anderson at the back. A
midfield with Steve Tennant, Steve Tierney and Dave Bergan, with
Stuart Cape and Gareth Huxall on the wings. The front line was led
by Mark Reid and returning Gavin Huxall.
The
game started with the Yorkshire Bank on top as was to be expected as
they had the wind with them, and the advantage of playing down the
slope. Chances were created, and in the first ten minutes the Bank
had struck the post, when Stu Cape whipped in a low cross that
Gareth Huxall diverted towards goal, only to be tipped onto the post
by the St Nics keeper.
The pressure however didn't stop there, and it seemed a matter of
time before the Bank would break the deadlock. It wasn't much of a
shock then when the ball broke free to Gavin Huxall from six yards
who coolly placed the ball past the keeper to end his goal drought.
The
score line soon doubled, some neat build up play down the right hand
side between Huxall and Tierney led to the ball been crossed, Gavin
Huxall headed the ball back across goal, but the strong winds took
the ball over the keepers reach and into the goal.
The
only other action of the first half was a 40yard effort from Gareth
Huxall which smashed the crossbar!!
The half ended with a 2-0
score line. Would it be enough?
The
second half saw the Bank switch to a 4-4-2 formation, with Steve
Tennant dropping into a back four. It was always going to be a
difficult half against the slope and the wind, not to mention that
the St Nicholas right back could reach the opposing 18 yard box from
goal kicks!!
The
Bank spent the first 30 minutes of the second half battling well,
and kept the away side at bay and also created a couple of chances
themselves. Notably, Steve Tennant rose well and just missed a good
header from a Stuart Cape corner which went slightly wide.
The
last 15 minutes of the game however saw the champions throw away
their 2-0 lead, the first an unlucky OG from Steve Tennant, who had
been solid throughout the game and will be a contender for MOTM this
week without a doubt.
The goal gave St Nicholas some belief, and the last ten minutes saw
the Bank sat on their own 18 yard box defending shot after shot, and
attack after attack. Notably an awesome save from keeper Michael
Earnshaw who parried a low drilled free kick followed up by a superb
stop from 5 yards.
The killer blow however came with 5 minutes to go, again a corner
from the St Nics side caused troubles and somehow one of the
smallest players on the park headed the ball into the top corner, a
well taken header which left the keeper with no chance.
All in all a 2-2 result was probably fair, but the Bank will feel
hard done to having lost a 2-0 lead. The two sides are to meet again
this season which will be another close affair no doubt.

Moortown - The Home Of The
Yorkshire Bank Fc
There
has been lots of speculation over the summer regarding the Moortown
sports ground that had been the home of the Yorkshire Bank for so
many years. A website has been placed on the net to inform people of
any updates.
